Celebrating More Thank Four Decades of Maritime Tradition

Beginning in 1984, the Ocean Insitute's Maritime Festival has roots extending to 1975, when a replica of Richard Henry Dana Jr. 's vessel, The Pilgrim, arrived at Dana Point Harbor, followed later by The Spirit of Dana Point. Throughout the decades, this gathering has grown into an expansive tribute to seafaring culture, highlighting historical tall ships, nautical legacies, ocean conservation, marine education, local craftspeople, and even pirates and mermaids.

The city’s identity and name are deeply intertwined with its seafaring past, originating with Richard Henry Dana Jr., who sailed into the area in 1835. He later detailed his coastal California journeys in the literary classic, "Two Years Before the Mast", where his evocative portrayals of the dramatic cliffs and sheltered cove ultimately inspired the name "Dana Point." At just 20 years old, he observed sailors tossing cowhides, known then as "California Bank Notes" from the clifftops to be gathered below and loaded onto vessels bound for Boston, where they were traded and manufactured into footwear, saddles, and boots.

Held at the Ocean Institute within Dana Point Harbor, the annual celebration highlights the unique character of the destination. The Ocean Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit education facility, and 100% of the weekend’s proceeds go directly back into their operations and mission. Combining educational programs, family friendly events, historic ships, and living history demonstrations, the weekend serves as a gathering point for residents and travelers alike to honor the community’s deep and lasting bond with the ocean.
