The ocean here doesn't really have an off-season. Water temperatures drift from the mid-50s in winter to the low 70s by summer, and there's always something moving offshore — gray whales passing through December to April, blues and humpbacks lingering May through November. Surfers will find the most consistent swell in fall and winter. Best of all, nearly every ocean outfitter is based right at the harbor, so a whale watch one morning and a paddle the next is less an itinerary than a stroll down the dock. One day rarely feels like enough.
