With summer right around the corner, the Ocean Institute invites the community to a powerful evening focused on maritime safety and public awareness. The Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series continues with an unforgettable evening with a panel discussion from public safety experts from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Long Beach Fire Department. Conversations will include how our local waters-and the people who enjoy them-are protected every single day.
Calvin Harris, a marine safety expert who is assigned to one of the world’s most advanced fireboats based out of Long Beach-will join the conversation with team members from each agency to discuss firsthand with the public how him and his team manage search and rescue operations, boat fires, chemical and radiological emergencies, submersible sonar deployment, aerial coordination, and recovery missions. This will give the public practical information about how to call for help, what happens when a marine emergency occurs, and the tools and training these agencies use to respond swiftly and safely.
More than a lecture, the evening will feel like a live behind-the-scenes briefing, complete with a Q&A session where guests can ask their own safety questions.
*This event is open to the public for $10, with free admission for Ocean Institute members and students with a valid ID.
